Hello there! Lyn is taking a break this week and asked us to fill in for her. My name is Bunny and my partner in crime is Brian. We’re volunteers at BayFM. I’m head of the Blonde Joke Division and Chairperson of the Funny Hat Task Force and Brian is Vice-President of Political Humour and Small Farm Animals.
We were very excited when Lyn asked us to actually present a show this week! So after fastening our seat belts, we made sure to keep our arms and legs inside the BayFM vehicle and we were off with a show on FUNNY SONGS.
What better way to open the show than with the kings of comedy, Monty Python, and THE LUMBERJACK SONG.
We know that one person’s idea of comedy heaven is another’s version of musical hell but we did our best to make up a playlist that Lyn would be proud of. We reckon that there was a bit of something for everyone in it. Lots of songs had to be omitted because they were a little too naughty for the timeslot. One that made us chuckle, and was clean as a whistle to boot, came from The Offspring. They have a go at the “wannabe gangsta” or “wangsta”, as they call it, who’s wrapped up in hip-hop culture – not because he truly loves or understands it, but because it’s trendy. If you are looking for something just a little risque, then you may like Mighty Sparrow’s FRAID PUSSY BITE ME. It’s witty and ironic and just a little bit bad.
For straight out satire, together with a great jazz band, look to The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. On BIG SHOT they parody Raymond Chandler: “She had the hottest lips since Hiroshima”. It has to be one of the best lines ever. Equally briliant are the hilarious New Zealand duo, Flight of the Conchords. They gave us some folk’n’b jamming on BUSINESS TIME. Lyn’s posted this video before, so we won’t do that again.
Something a little more subtle, with a great Latin style song, to boot, is the clever and cruizy Kirsty McColl with IN THESE SHOES? That one was dedicated to Victoria. Byron Bay has a lot of SENSITIVE ARTISTS living up here, so King Missile had a perfect song for them. Just in case some of those artists are taking themselves too seriously (really?) then this song may just put life into perspective for them.
If you’re a Facebook addict, you might want to also take a listen to ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME, from Kate Miller Heidke. Now we went to great expense to bleep out all the swear words on this one. That’s how dedicated we were to bringing you our favourite FUNNY SONGS. Ok, the truth is that Lyn had already done this for another show, but it was well worth repeating.
Gotta love Tenacious D (Jack Black and Kyle Gass) with their ‘mock rock’ music. Check out TRIBUTE:
The brilliant Rodney Dangerfield told us how he never gets a break on RAPPIN RODNEY: “I Don’t Get No Respect!” He died in 2004 and his headstone reads simply, “Rodney Dangerfield…. there goes the neighbourhood.”
Lemonhead Evan Dando reveals a flair for comedy on THE OUTDOOR TYPE and we followed with a very silly song by a band with a very silly name: EVERYBODY WALK THE DINOSAUR from Was, (Not Was).
Here’s Fats Waller who’s out to prove that he’s an incredibly rude date on YOUR FEETS TOO BIG. Recorded in the late 1930’s, here’s some rare footage – we think from 1942:
Brian is a huge TISM fan. The name is an acronym of This Is Serious Mum. They’re known for their hilarious lyrics and Brian was out to prove that they work as poetry, not just as song fodder. A great example is their song LEO’S TOLTOY. Check out the lyrics here. It’s off the album, Hot Dogma, released in 1990. Unfortunaely no video clips of them performing this particular track so here’s an interview they did when they were promoting another of their albums, The White Albun.
I’m sure that it wasn’t in reponse to Brian’s poetry reading, but Screamin Jay Hawkins sang CONSTIPATION BLUES. “Yeah let it go, let it go, let it go.” It was probably the closest we got to toilet humour, because we’re way too sophisticated for that, we assure you.
So a couple of tunes that we reckon are of a more refined nature are, firstly, the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band’s KARMA SUTRA and then the brilliant Tim Minchin with INFLATABLE YOU. Here he is performing at a benefit at the Royal Albert Hall in London:

Flight of the Conchords deserved at least two songs in the list (we would have done a whole show of their songs!). Crazy funny is HIPHOPAPOTAMUS V RHYMENOCEROUS, which has a go at all the rappin’ and rhymin’ out there.
Comedy icon Peter Sellers does various versions of classic rock songs. One of the most bizarre is UNCHAINED MELODY. That was followed by another great suggestion from Charlotte, The Grand Spectacular with the latest i-Tube sensation, BEING A DICKHEAD’S COOL. Yeah “we’re having new age fun with a vintage feel.” Brilliant.
We owed it to everyone to finish up with a joke. And because I am BayFM’s Head of the Blonde Joke Division, here’s mine: How do you keep a blonde busy for hours? Write “Please turn over” on both sides of a piece of paper. Boom Boom.

Just to prove that I don’t take anything too seriously, especially sex, we opened this week’s show with BUSINESS TIME from the absolutely brilliant Flight of the Conchords.
The ‘sexy’ theme seemed to connect with many of our listeners because I had quite a bit of input this week. And its clear that different music serves different moods. For smooth and erotic you can’t go past R&B and for hot and heavy it has to be rock or funk. I tried to steer away from the patently obvious, but some sex anthems just couldn’t be omitted because, hey what the hell, they do it for me!
What makes a song sexy? Sometimes it’s in the smallest details. It can be an erotic tone to the voice or a throbbing bassline. A song that does both has to be AM I THE ONE from the amazing Beth Hart.
On FOXY LADY, Jimi Hendrix’s instrument isn’t so much a guitar as a penis with an amplifier. Even Hendrix might have met his match with Betty Davis, especially when she sings IF I’M IN LUCK I MIGHT JUST GET PICKED UP. Her hubbie, Miles Davis, suspected the two of having an affair at one stage. Despite the song’s title, her carnal, funk-rock delivery leaves no doubt as to who’s picking up who here.
OK, let’s calm down a bit. Time for the wonderful Dusty Springfield with BREAKFAST IN BED. On this track she offers a shoulder to cry on, and much more as well. I have to agree with listener Ian that Al Green just can’t be left out of a playlist of sexy songs, so I included LETS STAY TOGETHER to keep both of us happy.
Dinah Washington and Julia Lee were a couple of free-spirits who used the thin veil of double entendre to sing about their basic desires. Long before she made a name for herself singing the Great American songbooks, Washington often sang from a far more racy playlist that included the blatantly provocative BIG LONG SLIDIN THING. And Julia Lee & Her Boyfriends weren’t ashamed to demand that you DON’T COME TOO SOON.
Chris Isaak is one sexy looking dude and the perfectly pitched WICKED GAME was a certainty for this list. As was the far more explicit HEAD from pocket sexpot Prince. You can’t get a decent Prince clip and I prefer to show you the Isaak clip any old way. Helena Christiansen and Chris Isaak, directed by Herb Ritts. A no-brainer.
Santana’s SAMBA PA TI was suggested by Lynden who says that author Nick Hornby nominated it as a ‘song that exudes sex, despite having no lyrics/ vocals”. I think he may be right.
Alison Goldfrapp is the perfect fusion of disco, glam and electro. Not to mention sex. Check out the video clip of TWIST:
Is there a lyric as sexy as Kate Bush’s breathy, evocative “Mmmm yes” on THE SENSUAL WORLD?
Tim Buckley’s GET ON TOP was requested by Tracey, who assures me that his album, ‘Greetings From LA’ is what you need if you want to rock the Casbah with someone special. I can’t actually argue with that. After all, he talks in tongues and how good is that?
One of my favourite sexy songs comes from ex Belle & Sebastian member, Isobel Campbell, and Queens of the Stone Ager, Mark Lanegan, who sing the very provocative COME ON OVER TURN ME ON. Irresistible. I’d be over in a flash.
Don’t ask me what the title of Happy Mondays BOB’S YER UNCLE means but the lyrics seem to have as much to do with an Uncle Bob as Prince’s Red Corvette is about a car.
Fiona Apple’s song CRIMINAL is apparently a guilty admission about using your sexuality to get what you want. So that’s a bad thing, right?
Two songs that I find pretty sexy, although they couldn’t be more different, followed. On paper, the lines, “Will you come inside me/Do you wanna ride inside my love?” would seem to defy subtlety, but Minnie Riperton’s famous five-octave range lends those words an almost spiritual dimension on INSIDE MY LOVE. Minnie’s polar opposite is the one and only Janis Joplin. From one of my top 10 albums, Cheap Thrills, I chose the desperate yearning of I NEED A MAN TO LOVE.
How sexy is Marvyn Gaye’s LET’S GET IT ON? Here he is a the 1980 Monreux Festival. Someone hand that man a towel! Hotter than hot.
Another sexy song, from the gorgeous vamp Meow Meow, is I’M HUNGRY (AND THAT AIN’T RIGHT). She’s a fantastic New York based cabaret performer that I saw in Sydney in March. If you ever get a chance to catch her act, do it!
Heading towards the end of the show and I hadn’t played any hard rock! Easily fixed with AC/DC’s YOU SHOOK ME ALL NIGHT LONG. The music video has proven to be somewhat controversial with its use of leather clad women and a mechanical bull. During the shot with the bull, the woman playing lead singer Brian’s lover accidentally jabbed herself with her spur twice. The roadie who came to her aid married her a year later. Angus gave them a mechanical bull for a wedding present as a joke. When asked about the meaning of the video, the band said that its goal was to, quote, “be as politically incorrect as possible.” See what you think:
A natural closer was another rock classic – WHOLE LOTTA LOVE, by Led Zeppelin and we even got to fit in about 20 seconds of disco queen Donna Summer’s LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY. Oh, come on, I had to have at least one disco cliche in there, surely.

I purchased my first Apple Computer in 1984 and have been a faithful user ever since. Personal computers were still fairly uncommon then even though, in 1982, Time magazine had declared them the first non-human recipient of its “person of the year” award. “The ‘information revolution’ that futurists have long predicted has arrived”, declared the magazine, “bringing with it the promise of dramatic changes in the way people live and work, perhaps even in the way they think. The world will never be the same.” How right they were.
But everything Time magazine said, in hundreds of words, had already been expressed the year before in the song that opened our program: HOME COMPUTER by Kraftwerk, and in just two lines of lyrics too! “I program my home computer, beam myself into the future.” The group has been incredibly influential ever since. Am I the only one to recognize the theme to Six Feet Under in there somewhere?
Music’s relationship with intelligent machines has been a mass of contradiction. On the one hand, there are songs that express a fear of technology – the harshness the unreliability and the lack of humanity. And on the other, there are songs that yearn for the simple life that machines seem to offer, especially when it comes to your love life. Way back in the 60’s Connie Francis was of the opinion that a ROBOT MAN would solve all her problems. Years later, in 2004, Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls also thought that an artificial partner could possibly have its advantages. The song was COIN OPERATED BOY.
YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS Pt 1 is from The Flaming Lips’ high concept album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. The Lips were in top form in 2002 when this track was released. Apparently, the total destruction of evil robots is the name of the game here. More from the mighty Kraftwerk in the form of POCKET CALCULATOR: “By pressing down a special key, it plays a little melody”. That one was for all the book-keepers and accountants out there.
On a show about machines we had to have a song about a Juke Box and what better than Joan Jett, with I LOVE ROCK N ROLL: Yeah, “Put another dime in the jukebox baby”. Other machines included a TIME MACHINE from Grand Funk Railroad and a FRUIT MACHINE from the Tings Tings. As Katie White tells it, she’s fed up with being treated like a gambling device.
Gary Numan and Tubeway Army recorded DOWN IN THE PARK in 1979. It was Numan’s first composition on keyboards and his first release to feature the electronic sound that would become his tradmark. The theme of the song is typical of Numan’s work at the time as it both embraced and feared technology. Here’s a clip from the DVD Urgh! A Music War (1981). Lady Gaga, eat your heart out:
Sufjan Stevens’ contribution to our theme was DEAR MR. SUPERCOMPUTER, from his Avalanche album, and we followed with Electric Light Orchestra and YOURS TRULY 2095 where we are asked to pity the “cold as ice” IBM that must tolerate a two-timing user.
Melbourne based, Swedish artist Jens Lekman’s A POSTCARD TO NINA has a shaky connection to this weeks theme. It’s really about him acting as a cover for a friend who is a lesbian but she doesn’t want her family to know. There is a mention of emails, and – wait for it – a lie detector – so hey, how could I leave it out? It’s also quite a nice song. Here’s a clip from a concert he did in Melbourne in 2006. His guitar died, so he played on the uke. Gorgeous. And love the reference to cult film ‘Buffalo 66″.
Are you a fan of Flight of the Conchords? I am. The song ROBOTS, also known as “Humans Are Dead”, is sung by both Bret and Jermaine. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic “distant future” where all humans are dead and robots have taken over the world. Within the context of the plot of the show, it’s the band’s first music video. Since the band has very limited funds, Murray constructs the robot costumes himself, (“they don’t look like Daft Punk -we wanted ones like Daft Punk”), and films the video using a mobile phone. Crazy stuff.
Hip-hop trio Deltron 3030 gave us a cartoon villain who loves the idea of creating a “VIRUS to bring dire straits to your environment”. It’s from their debut album Deltron 3030, released in 2000.
The only cover of a Who song to reach the Top 10, anywhere, is Elton John’s version of PINBALL WIZARD. It was featured in Ken Russell’s film version of the Tommy opera. The lyrics are forever planted in every baby boomer’s consciousness: “that deaf, dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball.” Here’s an outtake from the film. Makes me want to play pinball again!
James Brown reckons he’s a SEX MACHINE and who am I to argue? Well we had to have at least one song about man as machine didn’t we? And James Brown is the bomb.
I had to play, not one, but, two tracks from Radiohead’s OK COMPUTER ALBUM. First up it was FITTER, HAPPIER. It consists of samples of music, background sound and lyrics recited by a synthesized voice from the Macintosh Simple Text application. Written after a period of writer’s block, FITTER HAPPIER was described by Thom Yorke as a checklist of slogans for the 1990s, which he considered, the most upsetting thing he’s ever written. We followed with one of their biggest hits, PARANOID ANDROID. This clip was filmed at the 2003 Glastonbury Festival. I so wished I’d been there!
A nice piece of R&B followed with COMPUTER LOVE by Zapp Roger, featuring vocals by Shirley Murdock and Charlie Wilson of the Gap Band. And then it was Robin Gibb’s interesting attempt at reinventing himself in the 80’s with ROBOT. Sort of a techno/reggae/disco sound. Not sure what I think of it.
Swedish pop star Robyn contributed ROBOT BOY and then it was back to some electro with Daft Punk’s ROBOT ROCK. I’m not crazy about this French duo but of all their releases ROBOT ROCK is one of their best.
More to my liking is the theme to ROBOT CHICKEN, from the cult stop motion animated television series. Brilliant stuff. It was written by Primus lead man Les Claypool.
Styx contributed their classic ROBOTO, from their concept album Kilroy Was Here. The lines in the chorus DOMO ARIGATO, MR ROBOTO have become a catchprase and mean ‘
thank you very much’ in Japanese.
Kraftwerk deserved another outing. This German band came to prominence in the 70’s and 80’s and their distinctive sound was revolutionary then and continues to be highly influential across many genres of music today. We closed the show with COMPUTER WORLD.
