Radio Daze

p1000162The great thing about community radio is that it gives anyone a go – even me! I live in Byron Bay in Northern New South Wales, Australia. Its literally paradise, with beautiful beaches, rainforest and green rolling hills. BayFM is our local radio station and all the presenters are volunteers. Each Tuesday between 2-4pm you can tune into 99.9 on the dial and listen to  ‘Theme Park’.  Yes, its inspired by Bob Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour. But I don’t have 3 producers, 5 researchers and his great voice,  so be kind. I put together a playlist around a particular topic and throw in some surprise elements just to keep everyone on their toes.

First show, on November 4, happened to coincide with the biggest horse race in the Southern Hemisphere, the Melbourne Cup, so no choice but to theme the show around horses. We even crossed live to the racetrack and it turned out to be lots of fun. Here’s the playlist:

Pony Time – Chubby Checker

Back in The Saddle Again  Roy Rogers & Sons of the Pioneers

Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy  Big n Rich

All the King’s Horses  Dusty Springfield

Equestrian Statue  Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band

Jerry Seinfeld – I’m Telling You For The Last Time (Skit: At the Racetrack)

Black Horse & The Cherry Tree (Radio Version) –  KT Tunstall

One-Trick Pony – Nelly Furtado

Horse With No Name  America (1971)

A Horse Named Bill  Jerry Garcia & David Grisman

Whiskey for My Men, Beer For My Horses  Toby Keith & Willie Nelson

Wildfire – Michael Martin Murphy + Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on backup vocals

Tennessee Stud  Johnny Cash

Painted Pony  Blood Sweat & Tears

The Horses  Daryl Braithwaite

Long Ride – The Audreys

Horses  Patti Smith

A Good Horse  The Cardigans

Mr. Ed – TV Theme Song

Ghost Riders In the Sky  Willie Nelson & Johnny Cash

Horseshoe Man  Neil Young

Wild Horses  Cowboy Junkies

White Horses  Tori Amos

Faster Horses (The Cowboy And The Poet)  Tom T Hall

All Tired Horses  Bob Dylan

Midnight Rider  Allman Brothers

Goodbye Horses  Halloween

Equus  Blonde Redhead

Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses? U2

Horse Show Hotel Song  Stompin Tom Connors

Tune in next week, November 11th: in anticipation of a new US President that is worth celebrating, we will be looking at the history of black American music (in 2 hours no less!)
